Wellstreet invests in Berget AI to support the build-out of sovereign AI infrastructure in Europe

Stockholm, February 2 – Wellstreet has invested in Swedish AI company Berget AI, which has closed a SEK 24 million funding round together with Luminar Ventures and Norrsken Evolve. The capital will be used to accelerate the development and commercialization of Berget AI’s sovereign AI platform, offering a European alternative to global cloud providers.

The investment comes at a time when AI is rapidly becoming critical infrastructure, while stricter regulatory requirements, geopolitical tensions, and the EU’s new AI legislation are driving sharply increased demand for local control over data and AI workflows.

Berget AI was founded by Christian Landgren, known as a driving force behind Öppna Skolplattformen, and Andreas Lundmark, who brings extensive experience in AI development from Boston Consulting Group. The company is building a platform that enables the development of AI applications using open language models, operated on sovereign infrastructure in Sweden, ensuring that sensitive data does not leave the country and remains under European jurisdiction.

“More and more organizations want to use powerful AI, but cannot, or do not want to, place sensitive data in global cloud platforms. We offer an accessible alternative that provides full technical and legal control without the need to build and operate your own infrastructure,” says Andreas Lundmark, co-founder of Berget AI.

The company’s first service was launched shortly before the summer of 2025 and has seen strong interest from customers prioritizing sovereignty and data control. The new capital will primarily be used to accelerate product development and scale up sales efforts.

“We’ve seen that our offering aligns very well with real market needs, and that this issue is high on the agenda across Sweden and Europe. So far, we haven’t carried out any active sales efforts, but now it’s time to scale up to capture the strong demand we’re seeing for this type of service. We also have several new services currently under development,” says Andreas Lundmark.

With the EU AI Act and stricter requirements around transparency, traceability, and data control, the conditions for how AI is developed and deployed in Europe are fundamentally changing. Public sector organizations and other regulated industries are increasingly demanding solutions where data and models remain within EU jurisdiction.

“Sovereignty is moving from a policy discussion to a concrete, practical requirement for development teams. Our platform is built for that reality: local operations, open models, and technical control from day one,” says Christian Landgren, co-founder of Berget AI.

Berget AI targets developers who want to get started quickly without managing infrastructure, positioning itself as a cutting-edge alternative to both U.S. cloud providers and complex on-premise solutions. By offering a turnkey full-stack AI platform, Berget AI enables organizations to combine ease of use with data sovereignty, open technology, and sustainable operations.

“Berget AI combines the best of both worlds: access to the latest open AI models and full control over data and operations. This allows developers to benefit from the rapid pace of open-source innovation, without the risks associated with global cloud platforms,” says Jessica Rameau, Partner at Wellstreet.

Berget AI’s long-term ambition is to make local and sovereign AI the default choice for European developers.

“We are only at the very beginning of the AI era, and we believe that sovereign and sustainable AI should be the standard, not the exception, when choosing AI services in Europe,” says Christian Landgren.
